Lagoas Emendadas, in Santo Amaro do Maranhão (MA), Brazil: clear-water lagoons set among dunes, reached after a 40 to 50 minute walk on sand.
Lagoas Emendadas is a set of clear-water lagoons in the middle of the dunes, in Santo Amaro do Maranhão. The name comes from the way the pools meet one another across the sand.
Getting there is part of the outing. The walk across the dunes takes about 40 to 50 minutes and ends in an area of lagoons that sees few visitors compared with other spots in the municipality. Walking on sand asks for some willingness on foot.
This is a preservation area. At certain times of the year it is possible to spot the turtles known locally as "pininga". Late afternoon on the dunes, with the sunset, usually closes the visit.
Santo Amaro do Maranhão sits in the Lençóis Maranhenses microregion, in the immediate region of Barreirinhas, and has other lagoons in the Vivai catalogue, such as Lagoa da Betânia, Lagoa do Reflexo, Lagoa Andorinhas and Lagoa da Rancharia.
There is an active experience in the Vivai catalogue that visits Lagoas Emendadas.
