LAGOA AZUL
Transport not needed

Lagoa Azul is a seasonal lake among the white dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, in Barreirinhas (MA), at its fullest from June to August.
Lagoa Azul is a seasonal lake that forms among the white sand dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, in the municipality of Barreirinhas, in Maranhão. The water shifts between blue and green tones, and the surroundings are pure sand, with nothing tall enough to break the horizon.
Because the lake is temporary, it follows the rain cycle: it reaches its peak between June and August, when there is enough water for a swim. Outside that window the scene changes, so it is worth checking the condition of the lake before planning the visit.
It is one of the most sought-after stops for those who climb the dunes late in the day, both for the swim and for the sunset seen from the top of the sand. The same municipality holds Rio Preguiças, Rio Formiga, Lagoa Bonita and the Lençóis Maranhenses themselves, which usually share the same itinerary.
Since it lies inside a national park, the visit follows the rules of the protected area, and the way to the lake is made with a guide. The Vivai catalogue has an active experience that includes Lagoa Azul.
