Barreirinhas, in Maranhão, is a main gateway to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, with access to lagoons, dunes, the Rio Preguiças and river villages.

Barreirinhas is the town where almost every trip to the Lençóis Maranhenses begins. Set on the banks of the Rio Preguiças, it gathers hotels, restaurants, tour agencies and departure points, and works as one of the main gateways to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.

From here run the routes to the clear-water lagoons and the dune fields, plus the boat trip down the Rio Preguiças toward villages such as Mandacaru, Vassouras and Caburé. Atins, at the far end of that run, is also part of the itineraries of those based in town.

On the administrative map, Barreirinhas sits in the Lençóis Maranhenses microregion and gives its name to its own immediate region, which helps explain why so much in the area passes through it.
