Cachoeira do Herculano

Three 100-metre falls dropping into a canyon in the Chapada Diamantina, reached by trail and riverbed, with pools to swim in and about 2 h of walking.

Cachoeira do Herculano is a set of three 100-metre waterfalls that drop into a canyon. Getting there means walking part on trail and part along the riverbed, passing pools where you can get in the water.

The walk covers around 4 km, takes about 2 h on average and is rated moderate. The catalogue records a driving distance of 29 km from the town centre of Itaetê. Wildlife in the area is varied and animals may be spotted along the way.

In the Vivai catalogue the site is linked to Andaraí, a municipality in the Seabra microregion and one of six (with Ibicoara, Itaetê, Lençóis, Mucugê and Palmeiras) that share the territory of Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina. Being in one of those municipalities is not the same as being inside the park.

For anything inside the park boundaries, ICMBio recommends hiring a visitor guide, since the trails are not signposted. That advice fits a route that follows the river itself.
