Mina Brejo-Verruga

A former diamond mine in Igatu, a district of Andaraí, Bahia, reopened for visits by garimpeiro guides: 800 m on foot, carvings and a pool for a swim.

Mina Brejo-Verruga is a former diamond mine open to visitors, where the mining work is still visible in the galleries and in the tools left behind. Along the way there are carvings honouring the miners who once worked here, and a pool where you can get in the water.

The visit is led by garimpeiro guides, the miners themselves, who reopened the mine and explain how the extraction routine worked. The walk in is about 800 metres, takes around one hour on average and calls for light physical effort.

The mine is in Igatu, a district of the municipality of Andaraí, in Bahia. Andaraí is one of the six municipalities that share the Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina, along with Ibicoara, Itaetê, Lençóis, Mucugê and Palmeiras, but being in the municipality is not the same as being inside the park: the park's rules apply to whatever lies within its boundaries.

In the same municipality, the Vivai catalogue also lists Cachoeira da Califórnia, Cachoeira dos Pombos e Córrego do Meio and Rampa do Caim, which fit well into the same itinerary.
