At low tide, reefs off Garapua hold back the sea and form clear natural pools, in a sheltered bay on Ilha de Tinhare, Cairu, Bahia.
When the tide goes out at Garapua, the reefs trap seawater and shape pools of clear, shallow water you can simply stand in. The bay is calm, and the swim here is more about floating and looking than covering distance.
Garapua sits on Ilha de Tinhare, in Cairu, a municipality in the Valenca microregion on the southern coast of Bahia. The visit follows the tide, which opens and closes the pools through the day.
In the same municipality, the Vivai catalogue also lists other spots on the island and around the archipelago, such as Piscinas naturais de More re, Praia do Encanto on Quinta Praia, the Banco de Areia da Gamboa sandbank and the Mirante da Gamboa lookout, handy when you are already in the area.
