An 85 m waterfall at the bottom of a layered-rock canyon, inside Parque Natural Municipal do Espalhado, in Ibicoara, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia.
Cachoeira do Buracão drops 85 m into a canyon walled by layered rock, and the water gathers in a full, deep pool at the bottom of that stone corridor. It sits inside the Parque Natural Municipal do Espalhado, in Ibicoara, Bahia.
The walk in is about 3 km, takes an average of 1 hour and is rated light to moderate. Access is only allowed with a tour guide from the municipality.
By car, the distance to the starting point is 30 km from Ibicoara, 106 km from Mucugê, 154 km from Andaraí, 250 km from Lençóis and 282 km from Palmeiras.
Ibicoara is one of the six municipalities that share the Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina, along with Andaraí, Itaetê, Lençóis, Mucugê and Palmeiras, and it lies in the Seabra microregion. Being in one of those municipalities is not the same as being inside the national park: within the park there is no entrance fee, and ICMBio recommends hiring a visitor guide, since the trails are not signposted.
The same municipality holds other listings on Vivai, such as Cachoeira da Fumacinha por Baixo (the lower approach, via Ibicoara), Cachoeira Véu de Noiva, Cachoeira do Licuri, Cachoeira Rio Preto and the Fazendas de Café da Chapada, the region's coffee farms.
There is an active experience on Vivai that takes in Cachoeira do Buracão.
