A 3 to 5 day trek inside Chapada Diamantina National Park, sleeping in the homes of the valley's families, starting from Capão, Guiné or Mucugê.
Vale do Pati sits inside Chapada Diamantina National Park, across the municipalities of Palmeiras, Andaraí and Mucugê, in Bahia. It covers roughly 12,300 hectares of deep valleys, rock walls and high plateaus, tied together by a trail network of about 62 km walked over four days.
It is the one part of the park where you sleep in a resident's home. The few families still living in the valley host the people who walk through, and that presence is what makes the crossing a stay with someone rather than just a trail.
The usual starting points are Vale do Capão, the village of Guiné and Mucugê. Where you enter changes the order of the route and which sights fall along the way, so it is worth settling before you fix the dates.
Along the route you pass the Pati and Calixto rivers, the Cachoeirão waterfall, Morro do Castelo and Morro Branco.
The valley was first settled by diamond prospectors and went through a short coffee cycle in the 1960s. What is left of that history is in the houses, the old paths and the way the families tell the place.
Two practical facts shape the planning: there is no entrance fee to the park, and there is no mobile signal inside it. ICMBio, the federal agency that runs the park, recommends hiring a visitor guide, because the trails are not waymarked.
On Vivai, Pati comes as three, four and five day routes, plus shorter versions, all run by guides and agencies who live in the Chapada.
