Riacho do Mel - Bahia
A hamlet in the Chapada Diamantina, in the municipality of Iraquara, with the Dois Braços, Cravadas and Nego D'água waterfalls and the Gerais do Dandá.
Riacho do Mel is a hamlet in the Chapada Diamantina, in the municipality of Iraquara, Bahia. It is small enough not to appear in Brazil's official territorial division, which recognises only the districts of Iraquara and Iraporanga, and well known enough that the waterfalls around it each carry their own name.
What you visit from there: Cachoeira Dois Braços, Cachoeira das Cravadas, Cachoeira do Nego D'água, Poço das Traíras and the Gerais do Dandá.
One distinction is worth making, because almost no guide makes it. Being in the Chapada Diamantina is not the same as being inside Chapada Diamantina National Park, which covers only Andaraí, Ibicoara, Itaetê, Lençóis, Mucugê and Palmeiras. Iraquara lies outside it, which changes the visiting rules and who looks after each site.
Iraquara is, above all, cave country: Lapa Doce, Torrinha, Pratinha and Gruta da Fumaça are all in the same municipality. People who come through Riacho do Mel usually combine the two, waterfall and cave, in one trip.
In the official geography, Iraquara sits in the Irecê microregion and the Seabra immediate region, Seabra being the nearest larger town and the usual base for getting there.
