A cave in Iraquara, Bahia, known for its variety of speleothems, including a gypsum needle and an aragonite flower, with routes from 1h to 2h30.
Gruta da Torrinha is a limestone cave in the municipality of Iraquara, in Bahia, and holds one of the widest varieties of speleothems in Brazil and South America. Stalactites hang from the ceiling, stalagmites rise from the floor, and among them appear rarer formations.
What sets Torrinha apart are those unusual pieces: the gypsum needle, one of the largest in the world at 65 cm, and the aragonite flower, a crystal ball surrounded by needles. It works well both for someone entering a cave for the first time and for visitors who already know the subject.
Inside, the cave is covered by routes that can be done separately or combined. The shortest involves 700 m on foot, around 1h, with light physical effort. There is one of 1.2 km, about 1h30, moderate effort, and another of 1.6 km, around 2h30, moderate to advanced.
By car, the cave is 15 km from Iraquara, 28 km from Palmeiras, 64 km from Lençóis, 136 km from Andaraí and 184 km from Mucugê. Iraquara sits in the Irecê microregion and the immediate region of Seabra.
In the same municipality, the Vivai catalogue also lists Gruta da Lapa Doce, the Pratinha river and cave, and Gruta da Fumaça.
