Poço Encantado

Poço Encantado

A cave with a lake so clear it is hard to tell where the water starts, in Itaeté, Bahia. From April to September a sunbeam reaches the water.

Poço Encantado is a cave holding a lake whose water is so transparent that it is hard to tell where the surface begins and the bottom ends. Rock and everything below the waterline read with the same sharpness, and much of the visit is simply standing there and looking.

Between April and September, from 10am to 1:30pm, a shaft of sunlight comes through the opening of the cave and hits the water, which takes on a brightness it does not have at other hours. Outside that window of months and times, the lake is still there, without the beam of light.

Visits are limited to people over 12 years old. The physical effort is light, which makes it workable for anyone not used to long hikes.

The site is in the municipality of Itaeté, in Bahia, about 23 km from town by road and 38 km from Andaraí, an easy stop for anyone already moving around the region.

There is an active experience in the Vivai catalogue that includes Poço Encantado.
