Gruta dos Brejões

Gruta dos Brejões

Gruta dos Brejões, in Morro do Chapéu, Bahia: a cave mouth over 110 m high, a 7.5 km crossing, and access only by 4x4 with a local guide.

Gruta dos Brejões opens in the limestone with a cave mouth more than 110 m high, the second largest in Brazil, and nearly 8 km of passages already mapped. It is also a palaeontological and archaeological site, and it draws pilgrims because of the religious meaning the place holds.

The visit is a 7.5 km crossing inside the cave, taking on average 4 to 5 hours, at an advanced level of physical effort. This is not a short stroll: it asks for fitness and for the willingness to spend hours on cave ground.

Access is possible only by 4x4 vehicle and in the company of a local tour guide, a condition that applies both to reaching the entrance and to walking the interior. The recorded driving distance is 186 km.

The cave lies in Morro do Chapéu, a municipality in the Jacobina microregion and the Irecê immediate region. In the same municipality, the Vivai catalogue also lists Vila do Ventura, Cachoeira do Ferro Doido and Buraco do Possidônio, all quite different from this one.

There is currently no active Vivai experience for Gruta dos Brejões. Anyone wanting to go needs to arrange the trip with a local guide, respecting the requirement to be accompanied.
