Mucugê sits in Bahia's Chapada Diamantina, with preserved colonial streets, a Byzantine cemetery and waterfalls nearby. See its attractions and tours.
Mucugê is a town of preserved colonial houses in inland Bahia, with flower-lined streets and a cemetery built in Byzantine architecture, the only one of its kind on the continent. The old town sets a quiet pace, and most visitors use it as a base for the waterfalls and trails around it.
Administratively, the municipality belongs to the Seabra microregion and the Seabra immediate region. Mucugê is also one of the six municipalities that share the Chapada Diamantina National Park, along with Andaraí, Ibicoara, Itaetê, Lençóis and Palmeiras. Being in the municipality is not the same as being inside the park: the park rules apply to what lies within its boundaries.
For the attractions inside the park, there is no entrance fee, there is no mobile phone signal, and ICMBio recommends hiring a visitor guide, since the trails are not signposted. It is worth taking that into account even on outings that look short.
The Projeto Sempre-Viva runs the ecopark that carries its name, and around Mucugê you will find Parque Municipal de Mucugê, Mar de Espanha and Cachoeira da Sibéria, Cachoeira do Cardoso, Cachoeira dos Funis, das Andorinhas and Cânion das Sete Quedas, Cachoeira da Matinha, Córrego das Pedras and Moça Loira, plus Cachoeira da Fumacinha, reached from the Mucugê side.
The Vivai catalogue has active experiences in Mucugê linked to these attractions, for anyone who would rather go out with someone who knows the way.
